Gas range, and gas stove refer to the same basic cooking appliance customized with minute variations; its history and working principle are included in this post.

A gas stove is used to heat the dishes, which are placed on it. Generally, these are used to cook rice and other food items. A gas is used to cook as well as heat the food items. It uses different type of gases to provide flame, which include –

• natural gas,
• butane,
• propane, and
• liquefied petroleum.

In 1820, the first gas stove was designed by James Sharp.

Working of a Gas Stove

For a gas stove to work, it should be first supplied with gas, which can be any of the abovementioned types. Gas should be kept under pressure and with this pressure it passes through a pipe and gives flame at the opening, where a burner is connected. Since, the pipe is connected to cylinder the removed gas will be replaced by new gas that flows in, and pressure is maintained constantly.

Air Mixture

After the gas comes out of pipe, it mixes with air for producing powerful blue flame. In the earlier times, the color of the flame wasn’t consistent, but now due to some modifications made in pipe, the flame is always in blue color.

Burner Grates

The gas stove has metal burner grates to hold the pot to come in contact with the blue flame. They can be developed by cast iron.

Gas ranges are more costly than their electrical counterparts. With the help of gas range, one can easily control the flame and fast cooking is possible.

Safety Measures to Follow While Using a Gas Stove

Any device that utilizes natural gas is associated with some risks. So, it is better to follow safety concerns; some general problems and precautions are mentioned below.

Gas Leaks

Gas leakage is very dangerous; whenever you smell gas leakage, immediately open all windows and doors to eliminate the gas from house. Don’t use any flammable item at that time. Don’t switch on electric switches too.

Incomplete Combustion

If you don’t use the gas completely, then it becomes poisonous and toxic gas that risks the life. It is very dangerous, so you must keep the gas stove in open air areas and do not use it in a closed room. It is better to use a carbon monoxide sensor inside the kitchen room.

Common Problems

Sometimes, the burner doesn’t light up properly; if you encounter this problem, check whether the cylinder contains gas or not. If there is gas, then problem might be associated with pipe or burner; check both the components.

Sometimes, the burner won’t give light properly. This problem may be due to dirt and blocked ports. Similarly, sometimes the extracted flame may appear yellow in color, but not in blue. To solve this, do adjustment for fuel-to-air ratio.
